404 Problems when product is no longer available

There must be some better solution to the problems when product is no longer available. A 404 is then displayed. Of course, this is stupid for customers and Google. I have over 1000 404 pages within a few days. This is a real problem. I would prefer to leave the product online as unavailable. Kind regards, Carsten
